How do I assess the maturity level of enterprises when it comes to data (i.e. how good are they in using data)?

This was an interesting question that I've gotten when I conducted training today. :)

My answer, "Data Governance process & policies."

Let me explain.

Only  a data mature company will understand the type and value one can get  from data, mature enough to see the need to manage it like an important  asset.

The more verse an enterprise is in gaining value from  data, the higher the chance that they will set up robust data governance  processes and policies to ensure that their data is of the highest  integrity and can be trusted.

Thus, if I want to know if a company has strong data capabilities, the very FIRST thing I will look at is their data governance.
